The annual NGAUS Legislative Workshop is set for Feb. 11 and 12 at the National Guard Memorial, the association’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The event provides state legislative-liaison officers and association leaders with a chance to hear key officials in the nation’s capital explain this year’s prospects to pass legislation beneficial to the Guard, said Mike Hadley, the NGAUS legislative director.

“This workshop has proven to be a force-multiplier for us on Capitol Hill,” he said. “Our attendees return home with a better understanding of our agenda and a good feel for the current legislative environment. It makes our combined efforts much stronger.”

And with the president’s budget set to be released the week before, attendees should also leave the event with a good understanding of what’s in the spending request for the Guard, he said.

Hadley anticipates this year’s speaker will include National Guard Bureau leaders, congressional staffers, representatives from the National Governors Association and a lawmaker or two.

A presentation on political dynamics and defense spending in Congress by the Georgetown University Government Affairs Institute is already confirmed.

The event has also proven to be a great networking opportunity for all, Hadley said, including the NGAUS staff, which benefits from the added input from the field.

Things get underway at 3 p.m., Feb. 11 with an optional class on the association’s resolutions database. A reception follows at 5 p.m. A full agenda follows the next day, beginning with a continental breakfast at 7 a.m.
