The Army National Guard directorate has activated new company and battalion headquarters at the Herbert R. Temple Army National Guard Readiness Center in Arlington, Virginia.
The units will perform administrative responsibilities and related functions previously handled by the Military District of Washington.
The Headquarters and Headquarters Company and Headquarters Battalion were activated Jan. 28, according to the National Guard Bureau. The Army Guard directorate had operated without a battalion headquarters for 52 years.
Lt. Gen. Jon Jensen, the director of the Army Guard, oversaw the activations.
“The Army Guard of today, compared to the 1970s, is a completely different organization,” he said. “I think what this recognizes is the continuing maturation of the directorate here in the Army Guard.”
The Military District of Washington will now serve as the brigade-level headquarters for Army Guard personnel.
The Headquarters Battalion is led by Lt. Col. Colleen Shepherd, with Sgt. Maj. Brian Gary as the acting battalion sergeant major.
“The team we’ve assembled in our headquarters battalion is ready, willing and able to achieve, if not surpass, your expectations,” she said. “We will do everything in our power to ensure mission readiness and accomplishment.”
Headquarters and Headquarters Company is led by Maj. Matt Jordan, with 1st Sgt. Jackie Lampert as the first sergeant.
