Army Lt. Gen. Jonathan M. Stubbs will serve as the National Guard Bureau's acting chief, National Guard officials announced Monday.

The Senate confirmed Stubbs as the new director of the Army Guard Aug. 1, succeeding Army Lt. Gen. Jon A. Jensen, who retired Monday.

Most recently the adjutant general of Arkansas, Stubbs was promoted to lieutenant general in a ceremony Monday at the Herbert R. Temple Jr. Army Readiness Center in Arlington, Virginia.

A brigadier general last week, Stubbs is now the senior officer at NGB.

Stubbs will act as chief until a successor to retired Army Gen. Daniel R. Hokanson is confirmed.

Hokanson relinquished responsibility as NGB chief Aug. 2.

President Joe Biden has nominated Air Force Lt. Gen. Steven S. Nordhaus — who is currently the commander of U.S. North American Aerospace Defense Command Region and 1st Air Force (U.S. Air Forces Northern and U.S. Air Forces Space) — to become NGB's 30th chief and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Nordhaus' nomination is pending Senate confirmation. The Senate is in recess until Sept. 9.

Air Force Maj. Gen. M. Luke Ahmann — who is currently NGB's director of Programs and Requirements — will serve as the bureau's acting vice chief.

The Senate confirmed Ahmann for promotion to lieutenant general July 31, a change which will occur when he assumes command at 1st Air Force.

No NGB vice chief has been nominated. The position has remained open since the retirement of Air Force Lt. Gen. Marc H. Sasseville in May.

Army Maj. Gen. Joseph R. Baldwin, the deputy director of the Army Guard, will act as the ARNG's director while Stubbs serves as acting chief.

Air Force Maj. Gen. Duke A. Pirak, currently the deputy director of the Air Guard, continues his role as acting ANG director.

Pirak's nomination awaits Senate confirmation to replace Air Force Lt. Gen. Michael A. Loh, who retired in June.
