Guard and Reserve GI Bill Parity

Guard

THE ISSUE:      H.R.1836 the National Guard and Reserve GI Bill Parity Act

ACTION:          Immediately contact your Congressional Delegation and ask them to support H.R.1836 the National Guard and Reserve GI Bill Parity Act

Please contact your Congressional Delegation and urge them to support H.R.1836.

Background

NGAUS strongly supports H.R.1836 the National Guard and Reserve GI Bill Parity Act. This bipartisan legislation would provide the National Guard and Reserve Component recognition of their service, and will be a significant recruiting and retention tool as the Nation continually deploys Guard units to contingencies both at home and abroad.

H.R.1836, if enacted, provides parity between the Active and Reserve Components by allowing members of the Guard and Reserve who are on Federal Active Duty orders to accrue active duty service towards the GI Bill for each day they are in uniform on Title 10 or Title 32 federal orders, including training.

The bipartisan H.R. 1836 will prove to be the most significant Post 9-11 G.I. Bill change specifically for the Reserve Component since the creation of the program itself and we are excited for the prospect of this bill passing the House of Representatives. Additionally, we look forward to continued bipartisan discussions with your Senate colleagues as we work towards final language on this critical issue to your National Guard servicemembers.

H.R.1836 was introduced by Representative Mike Levin (D-CA-49) on March 11th and is originally co-sponsored by Reps. Palazzo (R-MS-4), Takano (D-CA-41), Mace (R-SC-1), Ryan (D-OH-13), Pappas (D-NH-1) and Del. SSablan (D-MP-At Large). Additional co-sponsors include Reps. Mrvan (D-IN-1), Thompson (D-CA-5) and Lamb (D-PA-17).
