President Donald Trump has asked for tanks, military aircraft and service members to participate in the “Salute to America” celebration planned for the Fourth of July on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Negotiations over what military hardware will be included in the celebration are ongoing, according to the Washington Post.
According to reports, all military services will be involved in the event, which coincides with the National Park Service’s annual Independence Day celebrations.
Trump has reportedly ordered a flyover of military aircraft, to include Air Force One, an F-35 Lightning II and Marine Helicopter Squadron One. The Navy’s Blue Angels are also anticipated to perform as part of the nation’s birthday celebration.
According to reports, military vehicles including Abrams tanks began arriving in Washington this week for the celebration. At least 300 service members are expected to participate, mostly from bands and drill teams.
Others, including Guardsmen from the District of Columbia, will bolster security forces for the event. D.C. Guard officials said their troops will help monitor crowds during the celebration.
The Post reported that Trump is personally involved in planning for the event and that cost estimates have not been released. The Defense Department also declined to specify details of its involvement.
Fireworks have been donated, according to the report. And barriers are in place around the Mall.
In addition to a pyrotechnic display and musical performance, Trump is expected to make a speech during the event.
