Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin outlined the Pentagon’s top three priorities in a message to the force last week, also highlighting specific areas of focus within those priorities.

Defending the nation, taking care of people and succeeding through teamwork are the top priorities that will help guide the Defense Department, Austin said.

“We need resources matched to strategy, strategy matched to policy, and policy matched to the will of the American people,” he wrote. “I believe that focusing our efforts on the priorities I have articulated here will help us develop that policy, fashion that strategy, and acquire those resources.

“I hope you will consider how you can assist in that effort,” he added. “Thank you for your service to our country and for your commitment to our national security. I look forward to working with each one of you as we build a Department ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow, together.”

Each priority has several missions. Defending the nation includes the ongoing work to defeat COVID-19, modernization efforts, addressing advanced and persistent threats and tackling climate change.

Taking care of people encompasses DoD efforts to grow talent, build resilience and readiness and ensure accountable leadership.

And succeeding through teamwork features work with allies and partners, work in partnership with nation and building unity within the Defense Department.

“As the Secretary of Defense, I am committed to ensuring that the Department develops the right people, priorities, and purpose of mission to continue to defend our Nation from enemies foreign and domestic,” Austin said. “This will require aligning our priorities and capabilities to a changing and dynamic threat landscape. We will do so in a way that is based on a sober assessment of our strategic needs and recognize the importance of building and sustaining a strong workforce and unity within our Department, across the Nation and with our allies and partners around the world.”
