National Guard Birthday

December 10, 2014 - 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Dirksen Senate Office Building
Room G-50

The National Guard Educational Foundation (NGEF) will host the 378th National Guard birthday celebration on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., with attendance from members of Congress, Congressional staff, the National Guard Bureau, Department of Defense, industry partners and invited guests.

The National Guard traces its long history back to the early colony days when the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony on Dec. 13, 1636, ordered the formation of three regiments in the Boston area. A militia and defense act by the first Congress in 1792 directed the militia to execute the laws of the Union, suppress insurrections, and repel invasions. The National Guard has played a major role in defense of the United States ever since. Then and now, our citizen-soldiers remain committed to making our nation and communities a safer and better place.
